Advanced Glaucoma Surgery
Currently, the only proven treatment to delay the vision loss from glaucoma is by lowering intraocular pressure (IOP).
The value of IOP lowering has been confirmed by many, large-scale randomized clinical trials. There are several methods to accomplish this goal: (1) Medications (i.e. eyedrops or pills); (2) Laser Trabeculoplasty, Iridotomy/Iridoplasty, or other laser procedures; and (3) Incision Glaucoma Surgery.
Oftentimes, one or more of these treatment options must be used to control IOP adequately and thus lower your chances of losing vision to glaucoma. Typically, we start with a more conservative method of IOP control (e.g. eyedrops or laser), and if this method is not effective, we progress to more invasive (but more effective) modalities like incisional glaucoma surgery.
Dr. Sidney Chang is the only fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist on the island of Maui. He completed his glaucoma fellowship at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis Eye Center, one of the top glaucoma centers in the world. Due to his unique training, he is well-versed in both the medical and surgical management of the most advanced glaucoma patients. He has extensive experience with trabeculoplasty, iridotomy, iridoplasty, gonioplasty, trabeculectomy, the Ex-PRESS mini-shunt, glaucoma drainage devices (e.g. Ahmed, Baerveldt, Molteno), diode cyclophotocoagulation, endoscopic cyclophotocoaguation, Trabectome, and other non-penetrating glaucoma surgeries. In fact, Dr. Chang is the first and only eye surgeon to have implanted the Ex-PRESS mini-shunt on Maui. Due to the high pathology he has encountered, Dr. Chang is also facile in the management of complex cataracts (e.g. white cataracts, loose zonules, small pupils, poor capsular support).
